Leadership, Service, and the Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is often described as a season of giving, reflection, and gratitude. At its core, it reminds us that Christ like leadership is not rooted in recognition, authority, or applause — but in service to others.

At the Sonoran Youth Leadership Initiative (SYLI), we teach our vanguard that leadership begins with character. The values emphasized during the Christmas season — humility, generosity, discipline, and responsibility — are the same values required of effective leaders year-round.

True leadership does not ask, “What do I gain?” It asks, “Who do I serve?” That question is especially relevant during this season, when opportunities to serve appear everywhere — in our homes, our schools, our communities, and our quiet daily interactions.

Christmas also teaches the importance of presence. Strong leaders, like the Maji, understand that being present — listening, supporting, and showing care — often matters more than grand gestures. A leader who can slow down, reflect, and appreciate others is better prepared to lead with wisdom and restraint.

As families gather and routines pause, we encourage our vanguard to reflect on three simple questions:

·        How did I serve others this year?

·        Where did I show discipline when it mattered?

·        How can I carry these values forward into the coming year?

Leadership is not seasonal — but seasons like Christmas help remind us why leadership matters.
